Sharm el-Sheikh, which is in Egypt, won a competition with other Arab towns to be named the Best Sustainable Tourist City. Khaled Fouda, the governor of South Sinai, made the news on Friday. In addition, the competition was run by the Arab Union for Tourism Media.
Sharm el-Sheikh got the award because it was able to host the COP27 meeting well and change into a green city that cares about the environment. This made it Egypt’s first green tourist city that wasn’t dirty. Last year, almost 20 projects were started in just six months to clean up Sharm el-Sheikh and make it a less polluted place to live. Thus, This helped promote the city as a tourist spot in the Arab world.
Projects to Clean Up Sharm el-Sheikh
In addition, Fouda thanked the Arab Union for Tourism Media for the meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh for its yearly meeting. He had also said before that Sharm El-Sheikh is the first green city in the Middle East. This was because projects to improve the city were finished before the start of the 27th Climate Summit (COP27).
This was a big part of how the city changed. Sharm el-Sheikh has shown other towns how to become sustainable tourist cities by becoming one itself.
