“Shark Attack Hotspots” on the Planet?: The world has been stunned by a shark attack following the horrible incident off the coast of Egypt, notably on a beach in Hurghada in the Red Sea. Vladimir Popov, a Russian tourist, was swimming with his father Yury Popov when everything happened. Yury Popov was helpless to save his son.

Even though sharks rarely attack humans, it does occasionally happen. Because of this, a study conducted by Athanassios C. Tsikliras of the University of Thessaloniki has identified the regions of the globe where shark attacks are most frequently reported.

According to the study, the United States, South Africa, and Australia are the regions most likely to suffer a shark attack. However, none of these countries had a fatal shark attack in 2022. In fact, Egypt, where the above-mentioned event occurred, had the most deaths in the last year with a total of four.

But they point out that the open ocean is the most dangerous place, meaning that close to shore it is very rare for an attack to occur: “The open oceans are often quite bleak and the pelagic sharks that live there make their living by opportunism. Whatever potential food source they find, they will try it,” explained Gavin Naylor, director of the shark research program at the Miami Museum of Natural History.
